Malik vows to expose PML-N’s corruption before courts, PAC
Interior Minister Rehman Malik – File Photo
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Interior Rehman Malik on Friday said that evidence of corruption against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will be presented before the courts and the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) very soon.
In a statement, the minister said that due to poor governance in Punjab, the province is on top regarding crime rate and corruption cases.
“People of the country have full right to know from the leaders of Punjab about their performance as it seems PML-N’s few ministers are deliberately doing so to disqualify their leadership,” said the interior minister.
He said Chief Minister Punjab Sahahbaz Sharif talks about making the country according to the desires and ambition of the Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah whose motto was “Unity, Faith and Discipline.”
“However, while ignoring “discipline,” the leadership of PML-N stimulates people for agitations and protests against the federation,” he added.
The minister said the PML-N leadership is also unaware of word “unity” as they besides promoting feelings of malignity in people against the federal government they have also been supporting the banned organisations openly.
Malik said they have only “faith” in money as they transferred such looted money from country’s banks to abroad.
The minister advised the PML-N leadership to stop politics of defaming just for petty gains and play their due role in the development of the country.

MPs with dual-nationality: Holding dual citizenship is no crime says Rehman Malik

Interior Minister Rehman Malik claims he has given up his British nationality, but insisted that holding dual nationality is not a crime under Pakistani law.
The interior minister, now with the prime minister in London, had submitted a written statement through Attorney General Irfan Qadir before a two-judge bench of the apex court.
Malik said he had given up his British nationality on March 25, 2008, before holding public office.
“I given up my British nationality … I thus do not hold any other citizenship, including British nationality, except that of Pakistan,” Malik said.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry asked Malik’s lawyer Azhar Chaudhry to provide evidence to support the interior minister’s claim.
Chaudhry said that since his client is currently on an official visit to the UK, he will discuss this issue with him on his return. The chief justice advised Chaudhry to ask Malik to procure relevant certificates from the British government to support his defence.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday had issued notices to parliament to provide a list of members who held dual nationality, and reissued summons to Rehman Malik, and MNA Farahnaz Ispahani to explain whether they have dual nationality.
Earlier, while explaining the circumstances surrounding his British nationality, Malik stated, “it may be informed that by virtue of my continuous exile in UK for nine years due to political victimisation and life threats in Pakistan, which is a matter of public record, I was granted British nationality but I never gave up my Pakistani citizenship as dual nationality is allowed under Pakistani law.”
The court was also informed earlier through an application that it has no jurisdiction to hear the case of dual nationality. The court, however, did not entertain that application and had asked Malik to reply with a yes or no answer to the court’s question.
Mian Rauf, counsel for MNA Zahid Iqbal, told the court that the British government has only granted permanent residential status to his client and that Iqbal retains his Pakistani nationality. The court asked him to appear at the next hearing on May 16.
Despite being issued summons, neither MNA Farahnaz Isphahani, nor her legal representative appeared before in the court.
The court asked her to engage a lawyer before the next date of hearing.

Pakistan, UK partners in fight against terrorism: Gilani
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza GIlani. — File Photo
LONDON: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday said Pakistan and the United Kingdom were partners in the fight against terrorism and extremism and his country remains committed to fight the scourge till its elimination.
Addressing a reception here at the House of Commons to meet with British Parliamentarians, on the invitation of High Commissioner Wajid Shamsul Hasan, Gilani said the democratic government has created national ownership to the campaign against terrorism and has brought all stakeholders on board.
Gilani said the Parliament has recently reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the elimination of terrorism and was combating extremism in pursuance of Pakistan’s national interest.
“We have also repeatedly said that we would not allow our territory to be used for any kind of attacks on other countries and we expect that the soil of other countries would not be used against Pakistan,” said the premier.
He said the sacrifices made by Pakistan in its campaign against militancy, terrorism and extremism were unparalleled, and the resolve of the two countries in this regard remains unshakeable.
Gilani who is here on a five-day official visit to the United Kingdom to review the Enhanced Strategic Dialogue had an extensive interaction with the British parliamentarians and shared experiences of the nascent democracy in Pakistan and the challenges it faced.
He was accompanied by Minister for Commerce Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Minister for Information Qamar Zaman Kaira, Minister for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar, Minister for Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, Minister for Interior Rehman Malik, Minister for Political Affairs Maula Bakhsh Chandio and Minister of State for Housing Raza Hayat Hiraj, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Social Sector Shahnaz Wazir Ali and Chairman Board of Investment Saleem H Mandviwala.
Prime Minister Gilani said the British Parliament is known as the mother of democracy. He said the Forum of Commonwealth has been proudly espousing the cause of democracy and the human rights among the member countries.
Pakistan became the member of the Commonwealth in 1947 soon after it became independent, but it was suspended during the military dictatorship of General Zia-ul-Haq during eighty’s, and was restored when Benazir Bhutto became prime minister after the elections in the country.
He said the membership of Pakistan again suspended during General Musharraf’s military rule and restored after the incumbent government led by me came to power as a result of elections in 2008.
Gilani said the Commonwealth indeed represents the aspirations of the people as it has gained glory as a powerful symbol of people’s empowerment and rejects the military rule in its totality.
“I am happy to state that there is not a single political prisoner in Pakistan today. Media is completely free and the civil society is robust and human rights organisations’ assertions are making qualitative difference as far as the human rights are concerned. Judiciary is free by any stretch of imagination,” Gilani added.
He said at the last Summit of Commonwealth in Perth, Australia, the Forum was unanimous in supporting the democratic governments of member states and pledged to foil the designs of those who intend to usurp the rights of the people.
Prime Minister Gilani who is visiting the UK at the invitation of Prime Minister David Cameron, said the Enhanced Strategic Dialogue (ESD), initiated last year provides a framework for a regular and comprehensive review of excellent cooperation between the two countries.
“We are appreciative of the UK support for EU trade concessions for Pakistan and we hope that the United Kingdom would continue supporting Pakistan’s request for GSP Plus,” said the prime minister.
Prime Minister Gilani while interacting with the British Parliamentarians at the historic premises termed it “an emblem of parliamentary democracy” and “repository of rich heritage and traditions.”
He said the ESD covers a wide spectrum of bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest.
“I am satisfied that we have made good progress under the ESD framework, and I look forward to holding detailed and wide ranging discussions with Prime Minister Cameron and other members of his cabinet to further intensify this cooperation,” the premier concluded.

Gilani will also launch a Trade and Investment Roadmap to enhance trade to 2.5 billion pound sterling by 2015, set by British Prime Minister David Cameron last year.
The first annual review meeting on Enhanced Strategic Dialogue will provide an opportunity to the leaders of the two countries to take decisions for charting the way forward in five strands of cooperation.
The dialogue was formally launched during the official visit of the British prime minister to Pakistan in April 2011 and covers five areas of bilateral cooperation including trade and business, finance and development assistance, education and health, culture, and defence and security.
The United Kingdom is Pakistan’s second largest trading partner and largest development partner among the EU countries.

Gilani will personally convey his gratitude to the UK for consistently advancing Pakistan’s case for enhanced market access to the EU, and supports Pakistan for GSP+ status.

Police, FC deployed; possibility of operation in Lyari

KARACHI: Heavy contingents of police and Frontier Constabulary (FC) were deployed in Lyari on Monday indicating start of “targeted operations” the IGP Sindh pointed out on Sunday, DawnNews reported.
There are reports of heavy contingents of FC officials reached at Eidgah, Kharadar and Risala police stations.
These officials will be deployed at entry and exit points of Lyari and adjoining business centres.
Earlier on Sunday, a news channel quoted the police chief as hinting at plans to launch targeted operations in some localities instead of a large-scale crackdown.
The police and Frontier Constabulary personnel had withdrawn from Lyari on Friday evening after failing to achieve desired results during the weeklong operation that had left at least 36 people, including five policemen, dead and over 150 others wounded.
Following the pull-out, Interior Minister Rehman Malik had told the media that the operation had been deferred for 48 hours only to be relaunched jointly by the police and Rangers.
But on Sunday, Sindh IGP Mushtaq Shah was quoted by a private TV channel as saying that the Lyari operation was not going to resume anytime soon. “An operation will not be carried out but targeted actions will be conducted in Lyari. The decision has been taken keeping in view the inconvenience caused to the residents during the operation.”
Meanwhile, CID police has arrested three suspects allegedly belonging to banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). According to police, they have recovered nine Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and several rounds of bullets from their possession.
Police has also claimed that the arrested were supplying ammunition to criminals fighting in Lyari.

No dialogue with banned “Amn Committee”
Interior Minister Rehman Malik – File Photo
KARACHI: Federal Interior Minister, Rehman Malik on Sunday ruled out the possibility of negotiations with the Amn Committee – the banned outfit of Lyari, DawnNews reported.
Malik said that the if the criminals of Lyari trust Nawaz Sharif then they can send for the Punjab police instead.
Speaking to the media after a meeting on law and order at the Chief Minister House, Malik said that Pakistan Muslim League-N will be making a big blunder by including Uzair Baloch in its party.
“Some political parties’ contacts with the criminals in Lyari will encourage lawlessness and such a move can be questioned according to law of land,” Malik said.
“With deployment of Rangers, FC and police, I want to give the people of Lyari a sense of peace and security,” he asserted.
He, however, warned the criminals that do be mistaken by the suspension of action and the space given to them (criminals), and that they should not see it as a weakness of the government.
The government would never compromise on the writ of law and maintain peace in the city at all cost, he added.
He said that President Asif Ali Zardari had directed him to maintain peace and restore the public life immediately, and we are using all options available for this purpose.
He said that it was locally managed police action limited to three streets of Lyari.
The police had authentic information that these streets had tuned into a stronghold of the criminals. But, he regretted, a hype was created by certain quarters of media and was projected as an operation in all of Lyari.
“It was not an operation but a targeted police action against criminals,” he remarked adding that however the police action was successful.
Malik said that the government wanted to apologise to the people of Lyari for the problems faced by them during the police action there. But, he pleaded, it was the criminals who had been using sophisticated and heavy arms including rocket launchers in the area and made public movement very difficult. This also badly affected the provision of food , water and health-care.
When his attention was drawn to loss of life and property of general public in Lyari, the interior minister said the Government would dully compensate the affectees.
He said that People’s Amn Committee (PAC) has already been declared as a banned organisation and the Government would have no dialogue with PAC men. The law would certainly take its course. However, he assured , there would no extra-judicial killing in the name of maintenance of law and order.
He said that Rangers are now present in Lyari and PAC leader, who is wanted in various crime cases, should fulfil his promise and surrender himself to the Rangers.
